Messy Lick Mat? 3 Simple Cleaning Tricks That Actually Help
A dishwasher is great for everyday cleanup, but some foods leave behind sticky residue, lingering smells, or a little extra color.
The good news? You usually don’t need to scrub forever.
Here are three simple tricks we use depending on what’s left behind.
01 — Different Textures, Different Tricks

Different foods behave differently once they dry.
For thick, sticky foods like peanut butter, try freezing the mat for 20–30 minutes first. Once firm, gently flex the silicone to loosen the residue, then wash with warm soapy water.
For creamy foods like yogurt or dairy-based toppings, warm water can help soften the film before using a small detail brush around the grooves.
For fibrous or starchy foods like pumpkin or sweet potato, rinsing early — before everything dries — usually makes cleanup much easier.
02 — When
Clean Still Doesn’t Smell Clean

Sometimes a mat looks clean but still holds onto a food smell.
After removing any visible residue, soak it briefly in warm water with a little white vinegar, gently brush the textured areas, rinse thoroughly, and let it air-dry completely.
This can be especially helpful after richer or dairy-based foods.
03 — When The Color Stays Behind

Foods like pumpkin, carrots, berries, or other naturally colorful ingredients can sometimes leave temporary staining on silicone.
Rinsing soon after use helps prevent pigments from settling in. For lingering color, gently clean the stained area with a little baking soda, rinse well, and allow the mat to dry.
A little natural sunlight may also help fade some remaining color over time.
A Little Care Goes a Long Way
Lick mats are meant to make everyday enrichment easier — not create more work.
For regular use, the dishwasher can take care of most cleanup. These little tricks are simply helpful when you’re dealing with a particularly sticky, smelly, or colorful meal.
Clean, reuse, and enjoy the next one.
