3 Things That Matter: Choosing Pet Enrichment With Care
When we first started designing our own pet enrichment pieces, we thought a lot about the obvious things — shapes, colors, patterns and how they might fit into everyday homes.
But the more we sketched, tested and tried different versions, the more we realized that some of the most important details are actually the ones you don't notice right away.
What something is made from.
How it feels once food is added.
Whether it stays in place.
How easily little noses can explore it.
And, of course, how you'll feel about washing it after dinner.
So when you're choosing a silicone slow feeder, licking mat or everyday enrichment piece for your pet, here are three things we think are worth looking a closer at.
01 — Start With What It's Made From
Anything that comes into regular contact with your pet's food deserves an extra thought.
When looking at silicone pet enrichment products, start by checking the material and the manufacturer's recommended uses and care instructions.
We also learned through our own development process that the little steps behind manufacturing matter too.
For our enrichment collection, we paid attention not only to the silicone itself, but also to finishing and post-curing — an additional step that can help reduce residual odor and volatile compounds after production.
It's one of those details you'll probably never see once the finished piece reaches your home.
But that's exactly why it mattered to us.
We also wanted our everyday enrichment pieces to fit naturally into real routines, so practical questions became part of the design process too:
Can I put it in the dishwasher?
Can I prepare something ahead and freeze it?
Will it be simple enough that I'll actually want to use it again tomorrow?
Because thoughtful design starts long before something looks beautiful.
02 — Made to Explore
Then comes our favorite part: enrichment itself.
Different textures, heights, curves and spaces can make an ordinary meal feel more engaging and interesting
But we don't believe more complicated automatically means better.
The design should invite a pet to explore — not make eating unnecessarily frustrating.
That's why we think about things like pattern depth, spacing and accessibility just as much as how a design looks.
Can wet and dry foods both work?
Can little noses comfortably reach different areas?
Are there enough variations to keep things interesting without creating tiny corners that are impossible to clean?
And because every pet explores differently, what works wonderfully for one may feel completely different for another.
Shorter noses, longer noses, younger pets, seniors and pets that are completely new to enrichment may all approach the same design in their own way.
We love creating different experiences within one piece so pets can sniff, lick and explore at their own pace.
03 — Designed for Everyday Use
Soft doesn't have to mean flimsy.
This was one of the things we learned most clearly through prototyping.
Some of our earliest versions looked lovely sitting on a table, but once we actually pressed food into them, moved them around and imagined an excited little nose exploring every corner, we started noticing where more structure was needed.
So we adjusted. And adjusted again.
Wall heights, spacing, the support underneath, suction placement and even the way different areas connect can change how stable an enrichment piece feels.
It's one of the reasons we believe choosing a pet enrichment product shouldn't be based on appearance alone.
Take a moment to imagine how your pet actually eats.
Does the bowl stay comfortably in place?
Does it have enough structure once food is added?
Does the size make sense for your pet?
And always remember that silicone enrichment pieces are feeding tools rather than chew toys. Like anything your pet uses regularly, it's a good idea to inspect them over time and replace them if they become damaged.
For us, durability isn't about making something harder. It's about finding that little balance between softness, flexibility and enough support for everyday life.

It's all the little things working together.
The material.
The structure.
The spacing.
The textures.
The way something cleans.
And the way it fits quietly into the routines you already share with your pet.
